Limited access to employer retirement plans and lower wages levels mean poverty in retirement unless the young can be encouraged, with incentives from the federal government, to save for their retirement, starting at a young age. This starting point of saving is the key.

Eric...
i'm glad to see that you're exercising your freedom of speach...but you sound like your actually supporting racism. You stated that there is nothing wrong with "scholarships that have ethinic or racial focus." If this is true, then why are you making such a big deal about "white" scholarships?...they have scholarships for only african-americans and hispanics..."white" is the same thing, just a label.

One of the people who responded to your little blog stated that they have no problem with scholarships based on race, including those for white people; they then stated that there is an abundance of these scholarships for "white" people. I am a high school senior and was out looking for scholarships today, and i could barely find anything that i even qualified for just because i was white. At the end of the requiremnt list for almost every scholarship i looked at there was a requirement saying that the participant must be of, and here is an actual list,"African American, Hispanic/Latino American, American Indian, Asian American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, or a Pacific Islander" descent...what?...are they serious?...why didn't they just say "not white"?...they could have saved themself time!!...the worst part is that was on almost every scholarship!!

So go do some research...i don't know what you are trying to prove, but ask a white person what it is really like to be white. They say white's aren't a minority; that's bullshit!!..my school is 10% white!!...they say whites push around kids of the other races and make racial comments to those of other races the most...?...are they serious??...i get things written about me on the walls because i'm white. i get pushed around because i'm white. People act like i'm invisible and they can do whatever they want to me because i'm white...

So who really does have the disadvantage?...

I'll tell you one thing: I' a high school senior, 4.87 GPA, top 1% of graduating students in the county...and you know what, i'm not going to college...want the reason?...i'm white.......

How's America now?

Eric,

I clearly stated that I have no problem with ethnic based scholarships, including white ethnic scholarships. Pointing out the great abundance of this type of scholarship does not make me an opponent of them.

Alleging that I suffer from some "anti-white extreme racial bias" is laughable -- because I am a white male myself. Being a white man does not prevent me from having the intellectual honesty to expose the gross hypocrisy that lies at the very core of this "white backlash". It is a reactionary and strident movement that sees ethnicity only when it is convenient to its cause and ignores the reality of the millions of "white" ethnic scholarships.

The whole movement of this reactionary opposition to scholarships for African-Americans, Latinos, Native Americans and other disadvantaged ethnic groups is riddled with internal logical fallacies. For example there is no such thing as a Latino race, and yet scholarships that are targeted towards Latinos are characterized as race-based.

European ethnic groups where at one time discriminated against, but this is no longer the case. Is it? You can see that an Italian American man -- like myself -- for example has an easier time of it than an African American man? Or does this escape you.

Eric I politely suggest you read a little more history yourself.

Eric:

If your issue with these scholarships is not about some bias you have toward minorities, how come you are OK with scholarships for women? Isn't that "discrimination against men?"

While I hope the people that have so much hate in them that they want to hurt poor people of color like this do not go after other groups they can not tolerate, one has to wonder why are they not up in arms about scholarships for people with disabilities or sexual orientation scholarship?

The facts are that there are hundreds of thousands more ethnic focused scholarships for whites than those who are from a minority groups. But people like you would begrudge them that. In my view all of these scholarships are good....whether they be for a person of color or a white person serve to educate the people of our society.

Dear Chris,

These are national origin based scholarships, not race based. These nationalities were all discriminated against when they came to the US. Jews are not white- they are Semite, just like the Arabs. Hitler killed the Jews because they were not white. There are blacks, asians, and people of all colors that have those national origans and these scholarships do not discriminate based on color like you allege.

Your ignorance and your antiwhite extreme racial bias shows with this:
    "* Polish-American scholarships ~ 57,100
     * Irish American scholarships ~ 131,000
     * Italian American scholarships ~ 223,000
     * Jewish scholarships ~ 808,000
     * German American scholarships ~ 142,000

Scholarships that are targeted towards some ethnic group or another literally number in the millions and the overwhelming numbers of these ethnic-scholarships are NOT targeted towards minority groups — groups that HAVE been historically disadvantaged in our society – but rather they target various white ethnic groups such as those listed above."

Your lack of historical facts and biases are probably based on our distorted educational system. You need to learn real facts and not make up fake but accurate lies like the Associated Press and Dan Rather.

Although there are the conservative hold-outs, it looks like the minimum wage is, state by state, being increased. Even the federal minimum wage is getting a boost this coming January. Although it is not keeping pace with the CPI and therefore is still not a livable wage, at least our state and federal governments are facing the reality that people simply can no longer make magic with last century's wages on 21st Century economic realities.

Far too many believe that minorities are lazy and are supposed to be relegated to abject poverty, passed over for opportunity and advancement, and never qualified because they've only received slipshod education. Unfortunately, many who are minorities are quite talented. How many can identify those veins of gold? Few. They wear the blinders of unconscious bias and live in a world where they miss the profound opportunities because of their having bought into the hype that's been rammed down their throats.

Some strong changes need to happen. Minorities and women need to become much more proactive in asserting their selves and their abilities so that they can stand in their rightful places in the work environment and do their selves and business justice.

As the workforce ages throughout the world, more and more employers are seeking ways to keep their valuable employees as well as recruit retirees often for part-time & temporary jobs and project assignments.

A diverse workforce must include seniors and the emphasis on this group to utilize their experience and work ethic has increased substantially and will continue to increase in the years to come.
